Chapter Ten

“Eboni, this is Ross Chapman.”

Her sister glanced up when she walked into their office with Ross’ arm around her waist. She knew she’d have a lot of explaining to do. Eboni had called Shanna last night to let her know she may have found LaToya. She’d run into a former client at a nightclub. Actually, she was one of LaToya’s client’s. LaToya was still doing hair but she had her own little salon she was running out of the basement of a rented townhouse. From what she’d heard, LaToya was apparently doing very well, because she had two other stylists working with her. All of which was a surprise to Shanna. Eboni gave her an address and Ross wanted to go talk to her later this morning. For now she’d have to deal with her sister’s curiosity about Ross.

Ross walked over to the desk and shook Eboni’s hand. “Hello, Eboni. It’s a pleasure to see you again and actually meet you this time.”

Eboni frowned. “I’m sorry. Do I know you?”

Shanna stepped forward, knowing she had to explain. “No, but you may have seen him briefly once. Don’t worry about it, you probably never even noticed him.”

“I don’t think so. If we’d met I’d remember.”

Ross smiled. “We didn’t actually meet. I was just one of the bystanders outside of the church.”

“Ah, I see…wait.” Eboni shook her head. “What?”

“It’s a long story, Sis,” Shanna said. “Long story short, Ross was on the sidewalk and opened my car door. We met later in Margarita by accident and he happens to be a security expert. I called him hoping he might be able to help me with LaToya since the cops can’t seem to do anything.”

“Uh huh. Is that so?” Eboni raised her eyebrows.

“Yes, that’s right.”

“And that’s the short version. Well tomorrow night you can give me the long version when we go to the club.”

“Ah, I’m going to have to take a rain check.”

She had Eboni’s full attention now. “What? Why? Do you have a date or something, ‘cause I know you’re not seeing anyone…” Eboni glanced at Ross and smiled, obviously reassessing. “Wait, wait, wait. This is who was going on in Margarita. I knew it!” She laughed. “Well at some point I want the full story. Ross, nice meeting you. I’ve got to run and visit one of our other stores, but I’m sure I’ll see you around.”

Ross remained silent, standing at her side until Eboni left. The minute she did, he closed the door. “If you want to go out with your sister tomorrow, I don’t mind. But do you mind if I tag along this time? I can even bring a friend or two.”

She stepped closer to him and put her hands on his chest. “We’ll go out with her and her friends and yours some other time. Right now I just want to be with you. Just us.”

“Whatever you want, babe. That works for me, too.” He lowered his head to meet her lips, wrapping his arms around her to draw her closer.
